s your computer rebooting continuously, after you tried upgrading your Windows vista to Windows 7 and it failed? The cause of this issue may be that the Boot Configuration Database (BCD) store has not been updated properly to restore Windows Vista as the default booting operating system.
When you upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, the upgrade installation may sometimes fail and throw the following message:
“This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it.”
However, when you try to reboot the computer, instead of booting to windows Vista, the PC may by default launch the Windows 7 upgrade process again and fail with the same message. This is because the Boot Configuration Database (BCD) has not been updated properly to restore Windows Vista as the default booting operating system.
The above issue can be resolved by following the steps detailed below:
1. Reboot the computer and select Windows Vista, instead of the default Windows 7 setup, when you see the boot entry menu
2. Insert the Windows Vista Media into the drive and exit the Windows Vista Setup when it is launched
3. Click Start–>All Programs–>Accessories, right-click the Command Prompt icon, and then click Run as Administrator.
4. Type the following command at a command prompt and press ENTER
Drive\boot\Bootsect.exe /NT60 All
Restart the computer
In the above command, replace Drive with D or E or any other drive where the Windows Vista installation disc is located.
